PVDF (Polyvinylidene Difluoride)
A Non-Retractable Injection Quill made from PVDF (Kynar®) material is best suited for injecting Sulfuric Acid in concentrations between 93 - 97%. This injection quill is ideal for installations into smaller diameter pipelines that can be shutdown or isolated to allow for maintenance of the quill. PVDF is machined from round bar stock and consists of the following components: HASTELLOY® C spring, Teflon ball, and a Viton Seat. Standard connection is 1/2" MPT x 1/2" MPT with a 6" solution tube.
PVDF (Kynar®) is a thermoplastic material with excellent chemical resistance to most acids. Typical Sulfuric Acid dosing ranges have been in concentrations from 93 - 97%. Over the last few years Municipal Water Treatment plants in the United States have faced troubles with existing Sulfuric Acid Piping Systems. Problems have included: pipeline damage, leaks, joint failures, chemical spillage and down time. These issues are rising due to a decrease in availability of low concentration sulfuric acid in the range of 93% and the switch by suppliers to 98+% Sulfuric Acid.
In many facilities, failures of the piping system occurred within 3 to 6 months of changing to the higher concentration acid. The culprit of the failure is a natural contaminant known as Sulfur Trioxide, SO3. The SO3 is a Stress Cracking Agent for PVC, CPVC, PP and PVDF materials. PVDF is not recommended for 98+% Sulfuric Acid that contains SO3.
If a true 98% Sulfuric Acid is being injected, HASTELLOY® C could be considered. HASTELLOY® C has exceptional resistance to many process materials, including highly oxidizing, neutral, and acid chlorides; solvents; formic and acetic acids. It also resists highly corrosive agents such as wet chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine solutions.
